Meet the Staff

It is the policy of Discovery Schoolhouse that all teachers exceed state standards
and be certified in both CPR and First Aid.

Teachers support a philosophy of learning through discovery.

The typical groupings and minimum teacher-child ratios are:

1 teacher with 8 or 9 children (10 max)
&
2 teachers with 16 or 18 children (20 Max)

Frequently additional staffing is available.

 

Brian C. Scheff
Executive Director / Teacher
Education: Degree in Early Childhood Education from Wheelock College (Day Care Specialist & Pre-school/Kindergarten program).  Many other workshops, seminars, and courses.  Graduate courses on integrating children with special needs, multi-cultural curriculum, and child care programming.  Brian holds a Massachusetts K-3 Teaching Certificate and Director II /Lead-Teacher of Infants, Toddler & Preschool Certificate from the Department of Early Education and Care.

Experience: Brian was Director of the Milton Preschool at 865 Brush Hill Road from July 1989 through July 1992.  Brian also taught in a child care center for several years - working with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school age children.  Brian fills in for other teachers on a regular basis as needed.
 
Schedule:  9:00am- 5:00pm

Brian and Rachel, who is a kindergarten teacher, live in Newton with their daughters, Mikaela, Sapphire, and Rebecca, and Jasper “The Friendly” Dog.  Jasper comes to the school every day with Brian and spends many hours in the classroom.  Brian also serves as a Director on the Board of Discovery Schoolhouse. He founded the school with a group of parents and teachers.

Elyse S. Robison
Assistant Director/Teacher
Education: Masters in Education & Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts and Elementary Education from Curry College.   Elyse holds a Massachusetts 1-6 Teaching Certificate and Preschool Lead Teacher Certificate from the Department of Early Education and Care.  She also holds a CDA (Child Development Associate) certification.

Experience: Elyse worked with preschoolers for two summers before starting at Discovery Schoolhouse in 1995. She had student teaching placements in first, third, and fourth grades.  Elyse was a full time teacher at Discovery Schoolhouse for many years before accepting her current position as Assistant Director.

Schedule:  Varies, Monday-Friday

As Assistant Director Elyse supervises the teaching staff.  She is originally from Rockland County, New York, and lives in West Bridgewater with her two sons, husband Tom, and dog Riley.  Elyse enjoys helping children build on their knowledge of the world.  She also enjoys reading stories and motivating children to create art and share their ideas.
