Is Discovery Schoolhouse a Day Care Center, Childcare Program, Preschool, Kindergarten, or a Nursery School?

Discovery Schoolhouse provides a warm, nurturing, supportive, educational, and enjoyable experience for children from 2 years - 9 months through kindergarten age, including some after school care for children seven through nine years old.  We are open from 7:00 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening January 1st through December 31st.  We do not follow a school-year calendar, and children enroll at any time.  We always have children enrolled for a variety of the available schedules, with some children attending “full time,” five days a week, 7:00 to 6:00, and other children attending only 3 days 8:30 - 3:00 (and often being picked up early).  Many parents send their children to Discovery Schoolhouse so that their children will have a positive social experience with other children, learn how to be friends, and learn about the world.  Many parents send their children to Discovery Schoolhouse primarily because they want their children to have a quality “preschool” or “nursery school” experience.  Other parents send their children to Discovery Schoolhouse primarily because they are in need of quality full-time “child care” or “day care” while they work.  Most parents send their children for a combination of these reasons.

What is Discovery Schoolhouse, Inc.?

Discovery Schoolhouse, Inc. was opened in 1992 as a non-profit educational corporation by a group of parents and teachers to provide a high quality early childhood experience for young children.  The school itself is basically a “two room” schoolhouse, and accepts a maximum of 30 children at one time, so we will always be a small school.  The building has been used as a schoolhouse for many years.  Discovery Schoolhouse, Inc. is also the Lead Agency for the Milton Early Childhood Alliance (MECA) and administers the state’s Community Partnerships for Children grant for the community.

Does the school have separate classrooms and
how are children grouped?

At Discovery Schoolhouse we do not have separate classrooms for different age groups.  Children of different ages work, play, and learn together for the majority of the day.  This “family grouping” allows children to develop a wide range of relationships and opportunities for learning from each other.  For part of the morning children work with their Team Teacher in a small developmental group of children around their own age.  For some of the older children this may be their kindergarten group.

What is the curriculum?
Discovery Schoolhouse follows developmentally appropriate practices as outlined by The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and is accredited by the NAEYC.  The program is designed both to be age appropriate for 2.9 year olds through children of kindergarten age, and individually appropriate for each child’s interests and abilities.  Teachers at Discovery Schoolhouse have a strong understanding of the development and growth of children.

Do I need an appointment to visit the school?
No.  You are welcome to visit and observe Discovery Schoolhouse at any time. However, if you would like a brief tour of the school and have someone available to answer your questions, we request that you call ahead to arrange a convenient time. Please read all the information in this packet before calling, since it will answer most of your questions!
